COLLEEN LOVEJOY THIS WEEK AT GREEN!

LAST WEEK: We decided to ditch the slam for an open mic format, and consequently had a great night of new poems and songs from the Greenies. Big ups to POCHO JOE for not only bringing his mom through (and talking about "happy endings" onstage), but for a fun, tight set of prop-inspired poems...!

THIS WEEK: We are pleased to bring you the musical stylings of a performer who cites influences as diverse as The Violent Femmes and Bob Marley, the extremely talented COLLEEN LOVEJOY!

A little bit about Colleen in her own words:

I started playing the guitar and writing Summer of 1997, just before my last year of high school. Since I couldn't carry a tune, I practiced my songs non-stop in our avocado orchard to train my voice. From 2002-2003, I headed a band by the name of LOVEJOY in Rostov, Russia, where I was studying to be a translator. The band was a huge success in the city and went on to record, tour and appear on MTV Russia. I came home to California in 2003 without my band, unfortunately, but determined to saturate the american music industry with Lovejoy Music...

So check out Colleen's music at www.myspace.com/lovejoymusic and then check her out live at Green!

See ya at the Palmer,
Slim, Jedi, and Joshua.

AND COMING UP IN OCTOBER:

October 8: G. Murray Thomas!
October 15: Paulie Lipman (Denver)!
October 22: Besskepp!
October 29: Tshaka Campbell!

FIRST SLAM OF THE YEAR! and: POCHO JOE!

LAST WEEK: We were honored to have Boom Crew goddess and sexy mom SIMPLY KAT rock her first solo feature EVER at the Palmer! And she did an amazing job, hopping into the crowd and keeping it intimate with a solid set of poems full of love and empowerment...!

THIS WEEK: Is it slam season ALREADY??? Afraid so, campers. And we are older and wiser and gearing up to take a team to the National Poetry Slam in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin. So let the slamming begin! We will take 8 poets and whittle 'em down to 2, who will then be qualified for our Team Finals later in the year. And blah blah blah--it's all about talented poets taking their performance game to the next level--and Round One happens this Monday!

ALSO: We're pleased as punch to have one of our favorite performers back to feature for the slam--the always engaging Joe Hernandez-Kolski, aka POCHO JOE! If you've never seen any of Joe's one-man shows or know about his open mic for teens Downbeat 720, know that Joe's work is all about challenging you and pushing the boundaries of performer and audience. Oh, and he likes to use props and stuff, leading him to known in some circles as "The Mexican-Polish Carrot Top". Just what we hear. Whatever he's doing--come see him this Monday...!

AND COMING UP:

one HELLUVA October, people...

October 1: singer Colleen Lovejoy
October 8: G. Murray Thomas
October 15: Paulie Lipman (Denver)
October 22: Besskepp
October 29: Tshaka Campbell

See you at the Palmer,
Rob, Jedi, and Joshua.

BOOM! SIMPLY KAT IN THE BUILDING THIS MONDAY!

The "Lull" is over and we're getting back into the full swing of things this week!!

Fresh off her stint on the 2007 L.A. Slam team, our feature this MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17th: SIMPLY KAT!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Simply Kat first stepped to a mic at age 17, and ever since then she has commandeered the stage with her heartfelt words, spirited presence, and universal topics. Kat has performed for numerous colleges in Southern California such as U.C.L.A, U.S.C., the Claremont colleges, and University of San Bernardino just to name a few. Not only does she seek to entertain, but to educate. As an active member of A Mic in Dim Lites Alumni Collective she has conducted workshops based on the arts of writing and dance for local group homes, high schools, and summer camps to make an effort to improve literacy rates and creativity within the younger generation.

Simply Kat speaks on issues such as racism, music, and the gifts and struggles of everyday life. Her work has been aired on radio stations such as 100.3 The Beat, college radio from California to Hawaii, and KJLH. She performed for the taping of Def Poetry Jam season 5 and can be seen in an on the rise film, 'SPIT'. Simply Kat strives to be limitless in her talents, but poetry still remains her first love. This Monday we're proud to welcome her back as our feature!

All this plus the (un)usual open mic madness you've come to expect!

See you at the Palmer, 9PM SHARP!

Jedi, Rob, & Joshua
