It's been pretty bananas around these parts lately. In the past couple of months, we've been privy to some incredible features from the likes of Jerry Quickly, Fresh City's Noni Limar, and most recently, Stones Throw phenom Aloe Blacc! Thanks again to all the new faces, as well as our loyal regulars who contribute to the weekly magic that is GREEN. We're going out of our way to make the Palmer Room THE place to be every Monday night!!
The heat doesn't look to be lettin' up any time soon as we welcome this week's featured guest: NIKKI BLAK!!!

A highly respected member of the Los Angeles Spoken Word Community, Ms. Blak has developed a voice with a perspective well beyond her years, challenging listeners and readers with a style that is direct, honest, and unapologetic. She is the recipient of the 2005 World Stage UCLA Literary Scholarship and was the only poet whose likeness was depicted in a Michael Massenburg Mural in the heart of Leimert Park in Los Angeles.
In November 2005 Nikki released her first collection of written work entitled GIRL, which has been embraced by the poetry community. As a member of the 2006 Los Angeles Slam Team, she traveled to Austin Texas to compete against poets from all over the United States in the National Poetry Slam. Currently, she is working on her second poetic offering "Five-Three and Rising", set to be released late this year.
On top of all this, she is an avid fan of hip hop duo Little Brother (like us!), and her shoe game is (in her own estimation) "REAL mean." Maybe she and Joshua can have a contest. Then again, maybe not. It could get ugly.
Since she'll be celebrating her BIRTHDAY (along with Green regular and alleged dominoe expert, Joni), perhaps some yellow cake with chocolate frosting will be in order.....
NEXT WEEK: Poets better get some Ackwright!! It's the latest installment of the monthly qualifying slam for team Gang Green!
In the meantime, Jedi, Slim, and Joshua will do their best to keep a food fight from breaking out.
See you at the Palmer (9:00pm sharp!!!).
ALOE BLACC FEATURES THIS MONDAY @ GREEN!
This MONDAY, MARCH 12, GREEN is proud to welcome Stones Throw recording artist ALOE BLACC as our guest feature! Believe me when I say you DO NOT want to miss this one!!

So Cal native Aloe Blacc began his recording career as an MC back in 1995, when he joined up with hip-hop producer Exile to form the mainstay indie rap group, Emanon. A few years later, Aloe would stow away on a European tour with underground hip hop superstars Lootpack and become fast friends with the group's MC extraordinaire, Oh No, a relationship which led to many fruitful collaborations as a solo artist.
These days, Aloe Blacc has evolved into a true Renaissance man. Recordings like his Latin cover of John Legend's Ordinary People prove that not only can this multi-instrumentalist produce, rap, and sing, but he can flip it in Spanish, too. With an amazingly broad set of influences ranging widely from the acoustic guitar stylings of folk artist Cat Stevens, to the soul-stirring sounds of the Negro Spirituals, Aloe prides himself on the spectrum of his musical roots. His sound often forays into the digital R&B realm, but always grooves with a tinge of Latin and the pulse of hip-hop. We feel blessed to have him grace the Palmer Room stage this week.
Of course, the usual suspects will still be in tow: DJ Jedi providing the musical backbone for the evening, along with Ratpack Slim and vocal percussionist supreme, Joshua Silverstein, co-hosting the festivities. And did we mention it's FREE?!!!!!! Come see us, have a drink, eat some fine grub, and listen to the most diverse and eclectic open mic in L.A.!
SIGN-UP LIST OPENS PROMPTLY AT 9:00 PM! EARLY ARRIVAL IS HIGHLY SUGGESTED!!!
See you at the Palmer!
