NONI LIMAR FEATURES AT THE GREEN SLAM THIS MONDAY!!!

If you haven't been around in the past few weeks--hell, the past few MONTHS, you've been missing some passionate features from New York to LA and back again, while the open mic has been nothing less than jam-packed with FIRE! And it's our favorite time of the month, y'all--the next qualifying slam for Gang Green 2007! Last month saw Blake and Sonya Renee take the top two spots...who's gonna make it this month? The buzz is that a lot of top poets are setting their sights on the Palmer stage...come by to support!

And our featured performer this week: The multi-talented, multitasking denizen of Fresh City...Green Army, let's hear about NONI LIMAR in her own words...!

"i luv what i do
i try to be better at it everyday
i cannot imagine life w/out music
i cannot imagine breathing w/out a pen
im a member of the best band in this city
we are FRESH!
i rap circles around ur boyfriend
i make ur lady swoon
ur mama luvs me
i have bad credit cuz i went to college
they gave me a degree in theater & no contacts to hollywood
im afro-punk
i date too many rappers
they're fun to write abt
i grew up w/out a father
he's no fun to write abt
my first performance was around 3 years old
my mom decided to start a country band
i was the frontman
im a womanist w/ chauvinistic tendencies
im unapologetic abt my fetishes
i luv metal face doom & gerber daises
i luv mangos & el matador
i dance around chaotically
w/ a voice like nina simone
i write for the liberation of my heart
to remember how to love
to remember how to give
to remember how to fight
to say
there is only one person in the room
let it be known"

BOOM BAP, there you have it. AND: a mini-set all the way from the UK and endorsed by Mighty Mike McGee: A.F. HARROLD is an award-winning performance poet and stand up person of English distraction. Although splendidly imaginative he has stolen most of his best jokes from Frank Zappa, Noël Coward and John Hegley, and his beard from Vivian Stanshall. He also has a fine line of vintage hats.

WHY would you not show up, barring illness or emergency??? See you at the Palmer Monday! 9 PM SHARP!

Green is as Green does,

GREEN WELCOMES SONGSTRESS MAYA AZUCENA THIS WEEK!

L.A.'s hottest weekly open mic just seems to get hotter every week! This MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19TH, we're proud to welcome the beautiful vocal stylings of MAYA AZUCENA!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Brooklyn-born and raised songbird Maya is often described as the "hardest working artist I know." Fiercely progressive in her career, managing and booking herself, she has received wide recognition in her worldwide Independent journey. The NY Post recently described Maya Azucena as having a "towering voice which has echoes of old-school divas, like Chaka Khan and Roberta Flack." In addition to the growing buzz across the U.S., she's toured European cities of London, Bath, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and ZoeterMeer. She recently made a return engagement to Toronto, performed in Italy and Croatia for the first time, and continues to build her international fan base. This year Maya has shared stages with artists Roberta Flack, Bilal, Martin Luther, Jaguar Wright, Leon Ware, Richard Bona, Lupe Fiasco, Rhymefest, Sleepy Brown, Big Daddy Kane, CL Smooth, John Legend, and more.

With a resume like that, we consider it an honor and privilege to have her bless the Palmer Room stage!

Slim and Joshua play ringmaster. Jedi provides the soundtrack. And of course this awesomeness costs you nothing at the door. We're CRAZY like that!

Next week: Poets get your shit together! It's the latest Gang Green Qualifying Slam!

In the coming weeks: High profile features from Fresh City's Noni Limar! Nikki Blak! KIM HILL! Stone's Throw phenom ALOE BLACC! And many more!

We're doing it BIG in '07 folks. Don't miss a minute of it.

See you at the Palmer, 9pm sharp,

Jedi, Slim, and Joshua

J.W. BAZ, SPARLHA SWA AT GREEN!

Hot open mic and equally hot feature last week! And the hits keep on coming, this week from all over the darned country...!

ABOUT J.W. BAZ:

A relative newcomer to the scene, J.W. Baz has grabbed onto the performance poetry world with both hands and taken many happy listeners with him, becoming a consistent Chicago slam winner and featured performer in multiple venues, including the legendary Green Mill. Armed with his confessional style, Baz tackles everything from searing social commentary to painfully-honest introspection with a generous portion of intensity and a dash of dry wit.

Recently, Baz won the 2006 Rustbelt Regional Slam and finished in the Top Ten at the 2006 National Poetry Slam as a member of Team Chicago. Baz also fronts the Salamander Word Ensemble, one of the most original and promising spoken word/music fusion units within the genre. His plans for the near future include a nationwide tour, the release of his first book and corresponding CD, Poet Laureate of Apt. 2E, and a stop at the 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam Championship. All things considered, he's doing pretty well for a guy who failed Creative Writing in high school.

AND: If that weren't enough, we welcome the amazing talents of songstress SPARLHA SWA! She'll be coming straight from a gig at The Mint, and if you missed her when she featured at Reflection, do not miss her this eve!

ABOUT SPARLHA SWA:

Solo on guitar, Sparlha is a velvetine clash of impeccable vocals and haunting modal chords. With her band comes a maddeningly satisfying concoction of solid Latin-tinged bass lines, intelligent and inventive beats, and a wildly roving jazz-rooted piano. Hers is a sound that ascends to Sade-like smoothness but with rougher rock edges, catchy hooks, and an international feel. Stunning, tender, contagious and wise, her songs speak about love, life and actualizing the true potential of the human spirit. She is a sure promise of wonder for music listeners of any genre.

Born in Stony Hill, Kingston, Jamaica, she began her travels early; from 4 months till her graduation from Stanford 17 years later, she lived in 8 states and 3 countries. Her cosmopolitan upbringing is easily reflected in her music, where you can hear influences as far reaching as Folk, Soul, Blues, Rock, Latin Jazz, Brazilian, African and classical Indian. Her musical mentors include Sade, Billie Holiday, early Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Astrud Gilberto, Ravi Shankar, Salif Keita, Miriam Makeba, and more recently Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, and Lizz Wright.

DON'T SLEEP! BAZ AND SWA AT GREEN! And as always on open mic nights, it is FREE!

See you at the Palmer,
Slim, Jedi, and Josh
