First of all, thanks for all who came out to the Palmer last week for the slam; it was a wild night...the East was in the house big time (big ups to Carlos Andres Gomez, John Blake, and Oveous Maximus for showing love!), and Sam Skow ripped an all new set ranging from hilarious speculative fiction ("If I had a Million Dollars") to a Mos Def inspired hip hop tribute to the Sacramento hardcore scene! Roger Bonair-Agard blessed with two poems from his new book and one-man show, and proved why he's one of the most respected poets on the scene today. The man has PRESENCE. And in the midst of all this, there was, of course the SLAM! Congrats are due to our two qualifiers this month, BLAKE and SONYA RENEE! The stakes keep getting higher, y'all...
And now a word about this week's feature, BRUTHA GIMEL:
You may have seen him at some party, show (Spoken Funk), or local reading (Da Poetry Lounge) wylin' out on the ones and twos. You may be pumping one of his mix cd's (The Soul Suite Vol. 1 or Vol. 2, Hip Hop Pioneers"Shell-toe Edition") in your ride. Or maybe you got your hands on a rare copy of "Rhymes In The Key Of Hope", his hip hop & poetry cd.

Maybe you saw him on stage in front of a mic (Green, Mic & Dim Lights), reciting his hearts ambition: "To utilize the power of spoken word in an effort to help shift the planet into a state of healthy consciousness and well-being".
That is part of of Brutha Gimel's mission statement. When asked, "What do you plan on doing with poetry & spoken-word?" His answer: "I want the world to recognize Hip Hop culture for it's attributes to society and for the "Renaissance" that it is."
This Monday, February 5th, Green is proud to welcome back Brutha Gimel as our feature.
Also! Recent Gang Green qualifier and all around swell chick, Dominica, will be celebrating her BIRTHDAY with us and about a gazillion of her closest friends. Come for the usual onstage calamity! Stay for the cake!
See you at the Palmer,
Jedi, Josh, & Slim

SLAM AT GREEN! SAM AT GREEN! DAMN! AT GREEN!About the featured performer for this evening, SAM SKOW:

Sam Skow has performed his "poetry" for the last seven years under quite a few different aliases (Buddha Hat, Barnabus Briefchatter, A Fumagating Ape) but none have merited the controversy as that of his own given Christian name. Beginning his slow and even currently imperceptible rise in Slam under the moniker Barnabus Briefchatter, Sam won his first slam at the Midnight Special Bookstore, a now defunct reading that took place every Friday night in Santa Monica. Frequented mainly by the stale crony Literati, Sam was like a gush of fresh blood to their flaccid mental genitalia. Obviously, he grew weary of having to weekly bridge the Viagara/Menopausal Gap.
Moving on to the original incarnation of Green (Tanner's in Culver City), Sam was relieved to hear some spoken word that was actually relatable, not only by the people listening to it, but by the writers themselves. When DJ Jedi casually remarked one Thursday evening that "that shit was hot," Sam knew he had found a home, or at least a cool foster home where you won't get molested as much.
Green moved to the Good Hurt Bar and Sam moved with it. Alcohol being introduced into the equation brought about a rapid bloom in the ever slacktastic Sam Skow. Slamming like he meant it, Sam was on the fast track to his fifteen minutes. After the end of slam season place shifting finished and preferential teaming was instated, Sam found himself as the alternate for the 2003 Los Angeles Slam Team alongside Steve Connell, Sekou tha Misfit, Rives and Javon Johnson (the Golden Child if you must). Rives went to Edinborough and the team won Nats. Rives' name was put in place of Buddha Hat's in the newspaper article. But whatever, man. Who's bitter?
Sam Skow is a charismatic enigma wrapped in a sexy riddle smothered in hot buttery question sauce. Someday he will figure out how to say what he really means. Until then, let's all bask in the hilarious nature of insincerity and how sometimes if you really think about it, it's still, like, y'know, kinda true.
PLUS: It's the next qualifying slam for Gang Green 2007...WHO'S NEXT??? Who's man--woman--HUMAN enough to be the next two to make it into the semi-finals for our very own national slam team? Thus far, Lara Kaapuni, Dominica, Ratpack Slim and Paul Mabon have cemented their spots. Who will up the ante and make this race that much more interesting? All takers are welcome, y'all.
See you at the Palmer (where it'll be the $5 cover for the slam!),
Slim, Joshua, and Jedi.
