SOLIDAD DECOSTA AT GREEN!First of all, big ups to PAUL M HARRIS, who performed a powerful set from his new book "Half Of Me". His energy and sincerity filled the room, and he was definitely felt.
Two weeks until our first qualifying slam for Team Green 2007, and the hits just keep on coming. This week: SOLIDAD DECOSTA brings the pain!!
Performer/author/video artist solidaddecosta is an uppity Portuguese
woman who isn't afraid to claim her black latina maternal ancestry. Equal parts street journalist, storyteller and 40 something crone-ta-be with leo moon credentials, her work encompasses the why and where of life outside the boxes in a label obsessed world, and the what, when, who and how of everything else. As Sins Invalid co-director Patty Berne says, solidad is a "Powerhouse of a Performer."
solidad has performed at a variety of venues throughout the US, including
St. Marks (NYC), Circus of Books (LA, CA), Olsson's Books (DC), Robin's Books (Philadelphia), Antioch University (LA, CA), Bumbershoot Literary Stage (Seattle, WA), Red and Black Cafe (Portland, OR), The Green Mill (Chicago), Cal State Sacramento, Brava Center for the Arts, SomARTS, City Lights, New College of CA, GalleryOne, San Francisco State, The LAB, The SF LGBT Center, Cell Space and The Living Wage Festival. solidad was also part of the video collective that produced "We Interrupt This Empire," a documentary on the shutdown of downtown San Francisco on March 20, 2003, and has created several experimental video pieces, exploring themes such as street activism, stencil art and genderqueer identity.
In addition, solidad has been a performance workshop facilitator at Cell Space, co-led writing workshops in SF Juvenile Hall and Alameda County Youth Facility, and was a panelist at the ForWord Girls conference.
Come join us in welcoming Solidad to The Palmer Room this Monday!

EMIL BRIKHA BRINGS INTERNATIONAL SPOKEN WORD/HIP HOP TO GREEN!So last week's HallowGreen spectacular was all that we hoped for and then some--big ups to Amber, Derrick, and Rob for creating a three-pronged attack of love and wonder. And to the Gang Green All-Stars: Sam Skow, Nicholas Lopez, Pocho Joe, Lara Kaapuni, Beau Sia, In-Q, Azikiwe, and Manuel for warming up the crowd with some down home Green goodness!
This week, we're dipping into the international talent pool by inviting EMIL BRIKHA to our stage! Emil is a 27-year old Assyrian from Iran, raised in Sweden. He...well, I'll let him tell you the way we told me:

"My name is Emil Brikha and I'm a 27 year old Assyrian from Iran, raised in Sweden. I'm a photographer, music producer, writer, rapper, spoken word artist and I'm bored. Life in Sweden is boring. So boring that I actually one week ago decided to sell all my belongings except for my laptop, synthesizer and camera and decided to go to USA.
I'm looking for venues like clubs, cafes... hell, football stadiums... to perform at.
I have my roots in electronic music as well as hiphop. Spoken word was actually something I did before I knew what it was. It wasn't until Sage Francis a few years later came to Sweden and I heard him for the first time that I realised that the lyrics I'd been writing that couldn't be rapped in a traditional way on a beat was in fact, spoken word.
What I do is I combine poetry and rap (yeah, how original) and I combine that with a laptop which works as a live music box for me. I arrange the music live and read my poems and "songs". In Sweden I've been doing this now for about 8 years, making music for about 12 years and I have released two cd's so far. I've done tv shows (debates and live performances), radio shows (reading chronicles and poetry), festival tours with the national theatre and so on.
So here's the thing. I'll be in USA, starting on the west coast during the first week of September and work my way towards Taylor Mali's club in New York from October 9th 2006... For work samples, mp3s, videos and more information about me, please visit my website at: www.emil.lqp.se".
