AMBER TAMBLYN, DERRICK BROWN, ROB ZABRECKY at GREEN!!!Every Halloween, we at Green Inc. do our damnedest to insure that at the very least, we're entertained. Two years ago, we took over Da Poetry Lounge and scared the sudience silly...without costumes. Last year, we booked the Temple Bar for a HallowGreen extravaganza. And this year, we bring you illusions and allusions as we welcome the poetic talents of AMBER TAMBLYN and DERRICK BROWN mixed with the next-level magic of ROB ZABRECKY!
Amber Tamblyn has been part of the Green family for a minute now, and in addition to being the hardest working twentysomething in show biz (Joan of Arcadia, Stephanie Daley, The Grudge 2), she's got a pen that writes for days (check out her book "Free Stallion", available at better bookstores and online retailers everywhere). We've worked out a deal where we won't talk about her traveling pants, and in return, she'll knock us out with spoken words and feisty phrases...!
Derrick Brown, former paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne, gondolier, magician, and fired weatherman, now travels the world and performs his written work.
As one of the most original and well-traveled writer/performers in the country, Derrick Brown has gained a cult following for his performance poetry all over the U.S. and through Europe. To date, Brown has performed at over 1100 venues and universities internationally including La Sorbonne in Paris and The Nuyorican Poets Café in NYC.
The Austin-American Statesman described him as "one of the freshest, most moving poets you will ever see." Known for a life-changing show that incorporates spoken word, music, and even visuals--Brown has made eight national book tours and four in Europe. His work on the page garnered him the California Independent Book Critics' Award in 2004, and his performance poetry has won six first-place slam finishes in Venice Beach, England, and Germany.
Rob Zabrecky , while rocking out as the frontman for Possum Dixon, discovered another performing art, magic. His early performances included an original character, The Ghastly Griffith whom he created by melding his love of silent film and vintage horror films with magic. The ghoulish Griffith performed at special events at L.A. landmarks such as The Orpheum Theatre and The Silent Movie Theatre. Since, he has created an inimitable niche for himself in the world of magic, primarily at the renowned Magic Castle in Hollywood where he regularly performs. He has received favorable regards from some of magic and mentalism's seasoned professional top names by creating an unforgettable show many have considered remarkable. Los Angeles Times Magazine raved, "Zabrecky telepathically predicts audience members personal preferences and causes items of jewelry to mysteriously turn up in urns."
All this PLUS DJ JEDI! JOSHUA SILVERSTEIN! AND GANG GREEN!
Please note: We will be starting
promptly at 9 PM, you stragglers. Also, we are charging for this event. It's $10 at the door--BUT--since you all were savvy enough to make your way to this site, then
it's $5 if you MENTION GREEN AT THE DOOR. And as always, it's 21 and up.
See you at the Palmer on October 30th!
Slim, Jedi, and Joshua
MALI WOODS at GREEN!This week, Greenest of Greenies, we are hyped to bring to you the songs and words of MALI WOODS, who has become a regular at the Palmer on Mondays and is kicking ass every time she picks up her guitar. A little official-type bio info for those not in the know:
Mali (pronounced Molly) Woods' songs are brimming with everything that makes music a powerful life-force in the world. Her lyrics are poetic, deeply thought, deeply felt and wield that potency all art seeks to accomplish: the ability to tell a personal story that makes us all nod and say, " You just said the thing I've felt all my life but didn't know how to express." Her story-telling follows the courageously forged footpaths of her folk-women predecessors, from Joni to Ani; this is the voice of a new generation of women who do not shy away. And what a voice it is. Mali's vocals soar flip rip dive and twirl through the air and then -- in a moment -- hush to a lull softer than the setting sky. Listening to her will return you to the pure raw beauty of the human voice, which she sets off with guitar accompaniment that takes as many risks as her lyrics and emerges triumphant. Add to this synergy of truth and beauty endless layers of melody, harmony and rhythm, the likes of which you've not yet heard, and what you have is a neo-folk-revolution. What you have is a canopy of light rising over the horizon. What you have is Mali Woods.Written by MacKenzie Mae Outlund
