GANG GREEN GOES GUERILLA

So, Green has put together what's called a "straw team" to compete in some slams this summer...and the Green Slam Team has been appropriately dubbed "Gang Green" by team member and ornery cuss Sam Skow. Last night, Gang Green participated in the first Battle for LA, competing against Da Poetry Lounge/Hollywood, LA, A Mic and Dim Lights/Pomona, and a youth team from Project Blowed(Leimert Park). Our mission? To give the slam audience something different at an LA slam. Our soldiers? UnSaen did a stirring rendition of a newer piece that Lara and I can only refer to as "Trigonometry", where the "N" word flowed like water. Lara Kaapuni rocked a treatise on drinking with her co-workers. And our power animal, Manuel, told a touching story about his son Owen...

Gang Green put the "dead" in "dead last", yielding scores like 4.0, 6.5, and .2 out of 10. Make no mistake--our performers rocked that stage. And we gave 'em something different. And we let them see how it's done at Green. Because, we hear...the points ain't the point...the point is poetry...!

Now it's on the next Battle for LA (TBA), where we may switch up our focus again. And then, Gang Green represents SoCal in the West Coast Regional Poetry Championship at Big Sur in July. Watch this space for more announcements...!
